Hair Transplant Risks and Complications

Generally, Hair Transplant surgery is a much more reliable and lasting solution for hair loss, balding or baldness; then any over the counter hair restoration products. But it is important for patients suffering from hair loss and baldness to consider several factors before opting for hair transplant surgery. These factors include possible expectations after the surgery, the risks and complications, and the possible solutions for the risk of compilations.

Factors to consider before hair transplant surgery and possible expectations after the surgery?

It is reported that 80% to 10% of the transplanted hair, would fully recover and grow back in approximately 3 to 4 months after the surgery. However, it must be kept in mind that, like normal hair; transplanted hair would thin over time. Furthermore, patients with dormant hair follicles; those which stay beneath the skin but fail to grow hair; may in comparison have a less effective transplant success and experience; nonetheless, according to a 2016 research study, which suggests that plasma therapy could possibly help up to 75% of the transplanted hair to effectively grow back again fully. Notably, it must be understood that hair transplant surgery may not achieve success for every patient, suffering from hair loss. Hair transplants are most successful for patients whose hair is naturally balding or thinning; or hair loss due to some injury. Thus, hair transplant surgery is very effective for men suffering from male pattern baldness; women suffering from hair thinning and patients suffering from hair loss due to injuries or burns.

However, it must be borne in mind that as most hair transplants tend to use the patients existing donor hair follicles; thus such a surgical procedure may not be suitable or effective in treating hair loss due to; overall and widespread hair thinning or baldness; hair loss due to medications or chemotherapy and where a patient is suffering from scars which form a thick scalp. Thus, a hair transplant surgery might not be suitable for women suffering from widespread pattern of hair loss throughout their scalp, patients who may lack in possible “donor” hair sites for hair follicles extraction, patients suffering from “Keloid scars” (Thick & fibrous scars) due to some injury of surgery and lastly, patients suffering from hair loss due to chemotherapy or some medication.

What to expect after a hair transplant surgery?

At the very beginning, the patients scalp may feel sore and tender and they would be prescribed medication following the surgery to alleviate such symptoms, including pain killers, antibiotics the reduce the risk of infections, anti-inflammatory medications to keep the swelling low and most patients could possibly return to their normal daily lives a few days after the surgery.

Patients must remember that its normal for the transplanted hair to fall out after 2 or 3 weeks after the procedure; this is a normal process; as it makes way for the hair follicles to hold their ground in the new transplanted site; thus, new hair could start to grow from the transplanted hair follicles. Generally, patients could start to see new hair growth in the transplanted site, after 8 to 12 months of the transplant surgery.

For rapid hair growth and to achieve the best results, most hair transplant surgeons recommend Minoxidil (Rogaine) or other hair growth medication such as Finasteride (Propecia) for quicker and lasting results; as these medications, while promoting hair growth, also helps in slowing down and stopping hair loss the future.

The long term outlook after a hair transplant surgery?

Generally, post-surgery, patients would experience hair regrowth in the transplanted areas of the scalp. Now, several factors weigh in to the fact of the overall hair growth outlook and aesthetic, towards a denser hair look; and these may include; scalp laxity and how to lose or tight your scalp skin is, the density of the hair follicles in the transplanted areas, the caliber, and quality of the donor hair follicles and hair curls. Furthermore, it must be noted that patients who fail to undertake post-surgery medication such as (minoxidil or finasteride) or undergo some form of low-level laser therapy, may continue to experience hair loss in non-treated areas of their scalp.

What is the Recovery time post-surgery?

Depending on the method of the hair transplant surgery, FUE or DHI, the surgery itself may last anywhere between several hours to several days, to complete. In reality, the actuality of the surgery and its time scale depends on the number of hair follicles and the work needed on a particular patient and their baldness. Irrespective, all transplant surgeries and sessions are carried out on an outpatient basis and the patient can return home the very same day.

Once after the surgery, on the first bandage change day; the surgeon carefully removes the bandages which cover the surgery site; and may inject anti-inflammatory medication into the surgery area, such as “triamcinolone”; to keep any swelling at a minimum.

The patient may experience pain and tenderness at the transplant site, as well the donor extractions sites, for a few days after the surgery and to alleviate these symptoms the surgeon may prescribe the following; pain killers like ibuprofen, anti-inflammatories, such as oral steroids to relieve any swelling or tenderness and lastly they may prescribe hair growth stimulants such as (minoxidil) or (Propecia) to help with hair regrowth.

Furthermore, we would like to inform patients about a few aftercare tips and tricks to get the most out of your hair transplant surgery.

  • Patients must wait a few days after their surgery before they wash their hair and must only use mild shampoos for the first few weeks after the surgery.
  • Patients must not use a brush or comb over the newly transplanted hair grafts for a period of 3 to 4 weeks after the surgery.
  • We recommend our patients not to indulge in exercise for a week or so after the surgery.
  • Furthermore, patients must not wear any hats or pullover shirts and jackets which may press down on the newly transplanted hair follicles; and until the time their doctors say that they are able to do so.
  • Patients may return to work and normal life activities after 3 days of the surgery.
  • Lastly, patients must not worry if their transplanted hair falls out as this is a normal process and the newly transplanted hair follicles may not grow any hair for a few months post-surgery.

Complications associated with hair transplant surgery?

Generally, most side effects subside within a few weeks after the surgery and these may include, bleeding from the transplanted site, infection, swelling of the scalp, a crust that forms on the areas where the hair was removed and/or implanted, numbness and lack of sensation in the treatment areas of the scalp, itching, Folliculitis which is an infection or inflammation of the hair follicles, shock loss or temporary loss of the transplanted hair and unnatural aesthetic of the transplanted hair.

It must be kept in mind that the last 2 complications; shock loss and unnatural hair aesthetic; are very much dependent on the hair transplant surgeon and the surgical method that the patients opt for. For this very reason, we recommend our patients to conduct their research and choose the best hair transplantation clinics and hospitals; with the best methods for the best results and necessarily avoiding any possible complications post-surgery.

Side effects associated with hair transplantation surgery?

Generally, the most common side effect with hair transplantation surgery is post-surgery scarring; which is dependent upon the surgical method selected by the patient. Methods such as DHI and FUE Sapphire, have the least amount of post-surgery scarring, in comparison to any other method of hair transplantation method of surgery.

Other possible and potential side effects may include, infections, crust or pus drainage around the surgical sites, scalp pain, itching and swelling, inflammation of the hair follicles (Folliculitis), bleeding, loss of sensation around the surgical sites, uneven hair density and hair loss due to hormonal factors.

Side effects of Hair Regrowth Medications?

It must be borne in mind that hair regrowth medication such as Minoxidil and Propecia can also have side effects; which may include the following; irritated scalp, dizziness, chest pain, headaches, irregular heart rate, hand, foot, or breast swelling and sexual dysfunction.
